Identity: The Story You Tell Yourself
What comes to mind when you hear the word identity?
At its core, identity shapes how we see ourselves, how we make decisions, and how we show up in the world. As a coach, I’ve seen this concept move to the forefront of personal growth—but many people never truly take the time to understand it or recognize the profound impact it has on their lives.
Identity isn’t just about discovering who you are—it’s also about uncovering who you are not.
The Stories We Tell Ourselves
Every day, we tell ourselves stories. These stories often begin with a small piece of truth—maybe a comment from a classmate, feedback from a coworker, or something said by a friend or family member. Sometimes those words were spoken in anger or carelessness; other times, the person didn’t realize the impact they were having.
But that small truth—like a mustard seed—gets planted.
And over time, we build on it.
We gather “evidence” to support it. We reinforce it. Eventually, it becomes part of how we define ourselves.
The Familiar Voice
What are the lies you tell yourself?
Can you hear that voice in your mind that says:
You’re not good enough.
You’re not smart enough.
You’re unlovable.
You’re a disappointment.
I hear that voice sometimes. And if we’re being honest, most of us do. It’s a familiar voice—but familiarity doesn’t make it true.
These beliefs are often built on falsehoods that we’ve reinforced with selective evidence.
For example:
“I’m not going to apply for that job because I tried before and didn’t get it.”
Do you see what happened?
A single past experience becomes “proof” of a much larger, limiting belief. And by accepting that belief, we keep ourselves stuck—building a life around something that was never true to begin with.
Breaking Free from False Identity
The good news is this:
You already have everything you need inside of you.
Your true identity hasn’t disappeared—it’s just been buried under years of doubt, fear, and false beliefs.
When you begin to understand that those negative labels were never truly yours, something powerful happens. You start to separate truth from fiction. You begin to let go of the weight you were never meant to carry.
And that’s where transformation begins.
From Weight to Freedom
Shifting from a false identity to your true one is life-changing.
Fear no longer makes your decisions.
The weight of self-doubt begins to lift.
You move with more confidence, clarity, and purpose.
Those old beliefs can feel heavy—because they are heavy. But when you release them, you realize just how much lighter life can be.
The Truth Sets You Free
There is freedom in truth.
When you stop believing the lies and start embracing who you were created to be, you open the door to growth, opportunity, and purpose.
You don’t have to become someone new.
You simply have to return to who you’ve always been.
